About the CTE Complex

This facility was completed in 2002 to service students from Weslaco High School, Weslaco East High school and South Palm Gardens High School interested in courses that are part of the Small Learning Communities known as: Design & Engineering, Health Science and Media & Techology. Each of these courses provide hands-on classroom instruction with lab experiences that prepare our students to develop technical knowledge and skills that support academic foundation. Students are also given opportunities to prepare and test for industry certificates/licensures and become members of SkillsUSA and HOSA that further their leadership skills.

About Joe Calvillo Jr.

Joe Calvillo, Jr. began his forty-one (41) year career with Weslaco ISD as an academic classroom teacher. He started at the elementary school level in 1960 at Horton Elementary School and Sam Houston Elementary School. He then taught Distributive and Marketing Education at Weslaco High School from 1968 until 1971, where he led Weslaco students to state and national distinction. In order to address the growing significance of career education in public school education, a position was created to supervise and direct the school district's vocational programs and Mr. Calvillo was named as its first vocational director in 1971, a position he held until his retirement in May 2001 - a period of 30 years! When Mr. Calvillo began his tenure as the district's director of vocational education in 1971, the district employed approximately twenty-five (25) teachers in the field of vocational education. In 2001, when he retired from the district, the school district offered approximately 100 courses in eight program areas employing over sixty (60) full-time career and technology teachers. During these three decades of service to the district, literally tens of thousands of students passed through these careers-focused educational programs who later became productive and contributing memebers of their communities in part due to the training and education they received in the Weslaco ISD's career and technology education programs.
